About the Cover

Protein S (PS) is a vitamin K-dependent anticoagulants and participates as a cofactor for activated protein C (APC) for inactivating factors Va and VIIIa. Deficiency of PS is associated with increased thromboembolic risk in the venous and arterial systems. More recently, FPS deficiency has gained recognition as a possible risk factor for ischemic stroke. Because of the presence of a pseudogene and two different forms of PS in plasma, a bound and a free form, it is one of the most difficult thrombophilia’s to study. Case reportshave suggested that familial FPS deficiency may play a causative role in young patients with cryptogenic stroke. We present a case of 7-year-old boy admitted with right side hemiplegia having a history similar attack at the age of 1 year. Laboratory finding showed that low level of total protein S. The patient was treated with intravenous heparin and discharged with improved condition by oral anticoagulant.
