CELEBRITY OF THE MONTH
Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck
158th Birthday (April 23, 1858 – October 4, 1947)
Originator of quantum theory

Max Planck was a German theoretical physicist, born in Kiel, Germany, on April 23, 1858, the son of Julius Wilhelm and Emma Planck. He studied at the Universities of Munich and Berlin. He is considered to be the initial founder of quantum theory, and one of the most important physicists of the 20th Century. He realized that light and other electromagnetic waves were emitted in discrete packets of energy that he called as "quanta. This is generally regarded as the first essential stepping stone in the development of quantum theory, which has revolutionized the way we see and understand the sub-atomic world. In a paper published in 1900, he announced his derivation based on the revolutionary idea that the energy emitted by a resonator could only take on discrete values or quanta.
